The Next G version of the RAZR2 supports HSDPA 3.6 data acceleration for a smoother and more consistent data flow across the network onto your handset, which in turn makes for smoother mobile TV viewing and web browsing. These operations benefit from the motorolla RAZR2’s souped-up processor engine, which at 500MHz is 10 times the speed of the old RAZR power plant.
Design and build quality are superb. The phone is beautifully balanced and combines a scratch-resistant glass finish over the top deck with a central hinge that’s cast from machined aluminium and an internal stainless-steel frame wrapped around the base.

Motorola KRZR K1

Warning: although this phone looks great, and initially we liked it, it has become clear that the KRZR has many reliability and durability issues. Of all the phones currently on the market, this one seems to be the most likely to fail in some way. We have to say that you'd be KRZY to buy it after reading the reviews on this page. Instead, consider the RIZR Z3, which is almost the same as the KRZR but in a slide design (and more reliable), or the 3G Motorola MAXX or V3XX.
Now that superslim phones are everywhere, Motorola's offerings in this department were starting to look a bit old-fashioned, even though it was Motorola's RAZR phone that started the whole superslim trend. Motorola strikes back with the KRZR K1 (or MOTOKRZR as the company likes to call it). The KRZR is a clamshell phone, like the RAZR, and shares a lot of the RAZR's technology, but whereas the RAZR was a man-sized phone, being quite wide despite its thinness, the KRZR is a much narrower phone that fits better in the hand and is more ergonomic all round.
The styling of the KRZR has been updated, with a reflective glass-coated surface that makes the KRZR stand out from the crowd (and acts as a magnet for fingerprints, by the way!) Although it's a fashion phone, it has a well thought-out design, with a functional (if small) keypad, and good ergonomics. However, the glass used is fragile and can scratch, crack or shatter, even when treated carefully. We have never before encountered a phone where so many users have reported a broken screen. This is obviously a design fault or manufacturing defect.
In addition to it's pretty looks, the KRZR has high spec features too. The main internal display is a high quality TFT screen with 262,000 colours and the same resolution as the RAZR: 176 x 220 pixels. The external display is rather poor, though, being of inferior CSTN technology which fades in bright sunlight. The integrated camera is 2 megapixels with an 8x digital zoom and a built-in picture editor, but no flash. There's also a video recording capability at CIF resolution, with a maximum duration of 25 minutes per clip. The absence of a flash is a disappointment, and limits the use of the camera. Next up is the music player. This supports MP3, AAC and AAC+ formats with stereo output to headphones via mini-USB or wireless Bluetooth. The KRZR isn't the best music player phone, as there is no support for drag and drop file transfer and only mono output from the built-in loudspeaker. Still, it does the job. MP3 tracks can also be used as ringtones.
There isn't a lot of internal memory in the KRZR - just 20 Mbytes - but the good news is that this can be expanded using a TransFlash memory card up to 2 Gbytes. As already mentioned, connectivity options are Bluetooth and USB (no infrared). Fast internet access is available via EDGE. Usefully the phone is quadband, so will operate globally. Battery life is average. The KRZR does suffer from having the unintuitive menus that non-Motorola users find so hard to use, so Nokia and Sony Ericsson users watch out! Texting is particularly tricky. There are also various software issues with the KRZR. These seem to depend on which batch of the phone you try, but you can get a flavour of the kinds of problems people have experienced by reading the user reviews below.
In summary, the MOTOKRZR is a cool fashion phone and being Motorola's first new superslim phone for about a year it would be a natural choice for RAZR users looking to upgrade. The KRZR doesn't excel in the photographic or music departments, but it's certainly an all-round performer that is more unisex in form and more ergonomic to use than the RAZR. However, the problems with the glass breaking and the software errors that users have experienced mean that we have to recommend that you avoid this phone.

In the good old days – like a year ago - MP3 players from Apple (iPod) or Creative (Zen) were everything music lovers wanted and needed. Now, mobile phones doubling as music players are trying to take the iPod's place in our hearts. We must confess that we are warming up to music phones like the Motorola Moto U9.

Clearly, the Motorola Moto U9 was designed with two goals in mind. In addition to being a GSM mobile phone, it is a small MP3 player that can be controlled without opening the unit. It is also a stylish device that looks like an MP3 player (when closed).

You won't find the latest and fastest connectivity technologies on the Moto U9, for instance, for high-speed Internet access, VoIP, or GPS navigation. As a mobile phone, it has basic features, but there are some nifty details on its MP3 player. The playback buttons on the external screen are touch sensitive. Also, the screen displays information about the song that's playing. Once you get a high-capacity microSD memory card (available up to 4GB in capacity), you can sync your music library with the device.

There was a time when Motorola favored iTunes software as the primary media library on its music phones, like the Motorola SLVR, but times have changed. The Moto U9 syncs with the Windows Media Player 11 and can play copy-protected WMA tracks that practically all music stores are offering for download, except for the iTunes Store.

Motorola ACTV (W450)

Unlike Sprint Nextel and Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile has virtually ignored the rugged phone. Yet, with its new Motorola Active W450, the carrier is making a push in that direction. The flip phone sports a thick sturdy shell made for those with (dare we say) active lifestyles. The result is, indeed, durable, but not without some compromises to the phone's controls and displays. Call quality was acceptable and functional. The feature set includes a 1.3-megapixel camera and a music player. The Bluetooth function, however, lacks a stereo profile. The W450 is $159.99 if you pay full price, but you can get it for $29.99 with service.
DesignThe Active W450 doesn't have the rubber sidings that you'd find on a Nextel phone, but the textured skin feels remarkably strong and sturdy, even though it is plastic. We enjoyed the solid feel in the hand and the large and well-constructed hinge. On the outside, you'll find a standard white-and-black color scheme, but on the inside, the phone features a rubberized keypad in either yellow or orange. We tried the yellow versions, and the features are the same on both models. The W450 measures 4.18 inches tall by 1.80 inches wide by 0.74 inch deep and weighs 3.5 ounces.
The external display is smaller than we'd prefer, being no bigger than a postage stamp. Resolution is just a four-color grayscale (96x80 pixels), so don't count on any fancy graphics. It shows the date, time, battery life, signal strength, and numeric caller ID, but it won't support photo caller ID or work as a viewfinder for the camera.
Completing the exterior are the camera lens, just above the display (there's no flash), and a loop on the bottom of the phone that holds the antenna. The volume rocker on the left spine is easily accessible when you're on a call and it is colored in the same hue as the keypad (orange or yellow). The sides of the hinges are also clad in the keypad color. Below the rocker is the mini-USB port, which also accommodates the charger. On the right spine, you'll find the microSD-card slot and the 2.mm headset jack. Though we love that the memory-card slot isn't stashed behind the battery, we'd prefer a 3.5mm headset jack.
The internal display measures 1.75 inches and supports 65,000 colors (160x128 pixels). The resolution is average when compared with other phones in the W450's class. Graphics and photos looked rather flat and colors were muted. You can change the backlighting time, but font size isn't adjustable. The menu interface is intuitive in both the grid and list styles and we like how Moto has slimmed down the options somewhat in the Settings menu. What's more, you can activate a new option in standby mode that places four-user-defined feature icons directly on the screen for easy access.
With the W450's keypad and navigation controls we understand what Motorola was going for, but we don't think the company succeeded. Though the rubberized material that covers the keys gives them a nice feel beneath our fingers, the individual buttons are stiff, with little tactile definition to separate them from each other. Indeed, dialing by feel was difficult and the keys didn't have a lot of "give." The dim backlighting won't help in low-light situations either. The four-way toggle is coated in silver, so it's easily discernible to the eye; you can set it as a shortcut to four user-defined functions. Two soft keys, a T-zones shortcut, a Clear/Back key, and the Talk and End/Power buttons complete the navigation array.
FeaturesThe W450's phone book has room in each entry for six phone numbers, three e-mail addresses, a URL, a birthday, a nickname, and notes. You can save callers to groups and pair them with a photo and one of 32 polyphonic ringtones. Other essentials include a vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, a speakerphone, a calculator, a calendar, an alarm clock, a world clock, and a stopwatch. You'll also find USB mass storage, instant messaging, a voice recorder, and a generic Moto music player. The W450 also offers Bluetooth, but it lacks a stereo profile.
